The lateral to the main connection can be the weakest point in a
collection system. The picture to the right shows the true extent of
the problem. A major structural failure in the crown of the main has
occurred adjacent to the lateral. Broken pieces of pipe now lie in the
path of flow. The significant offset and joint separation allows for
infiltration and sewage ex-filtration. There is no seal at the lateral
connection.
This also creates an entry portal for root
intrusions. Over time a complete collapse of this connection can
